Padgett’s Motorcycles has been awarded the historic Torrens Trophy by the Royal Automobile Club, recognising more than six decades of outstanding achievement and an enduring contribution to British motorcycle racing.
One of the most respected and successful names in the sport, the family-run Padgett’s operation joins a distinguished roll of Torrens Trophy recipients after decades spent supporting some of Britain’s greatest motorcycle racers.
The award is presented only in exceptional circumstances and recognises an individual or organisation judged to have made an outstanding contribution to the cause or technical excellence of safe and skilful motorcycling in the UK.
For Padgett’s, it represents recognition not simply of race victories, but of a remarkable involvement in motorcycle competition stretching back more than 60 years.
Six decades at the heart of motorcycle racing
Padgett’s has supported and developed generations of world-class riders across an unusually broad spectrum of motorcycle competition.
Its racing history encompasses the Isle of Man TT, British Superbikes, Irish road racing, the North West 200 and Grand Prix World Championships, establishing the team as one of the most successful and enduring privateer operations in motorcycle racing.
Its association with some of the sport’s biggest names stretches back to Grand Prix legends including Mike Hailwood and Phil Read, while subsequent generations of riders have continued to add to the Padgett’s story.
The Isle of Man TT in particular has become an important part of the team’s history.
Padgett’s has celebrated multiple TT victories with riders including Bruce Anstey, while both John McGuinness MBE and Ian Hutchinson have delivered landmark successes for the team.
Perhaps the most extraordinary came in 2010, when Hutchinson achieved an unprecedented clean sweep by winning all five solo races at the Isle of Man TT.
It remains one of the outstanding achievements in the history of the event.
Royal Automobile Club recognises an enduring legacy

“Their enduring competitive success, contribution to the advancement of British motorcycling and role in nurturing talent firmly cement their place at the very heart of the sport. This award recognises both their remarkable heritage and their continued influence at the highest level.”
A poignant honour for the Padgett family
For Clive Padgett, who continues to lead the family-run team, receiving the Torrens Trophy carries particular significance following the death of his father, Peter.
“To receive the Torrens Trophy is an incredible honour for everyone involved with Padgett’s,” he said. “It’s recognition not just of results, but of decades of hard work, passion and commitment to doing things the right way.
“On a personal level, this means a huge amount to me and my family. My father, Peter, dedicated his life to building Padgett’s into what it is today, and it’s something I know he would have been immensely proud of. To receive this in the same year that we lost him makes it especially poignant.”
McGuinness: ‘Padgett’s is more than just a team’
The close relationship Padgett’s has built with its riders over the decades was highlighted by multiple Isle of Man TT winner John McGuinness MBE.
“Padgett’s is more than just a team, it’s a family,” said McGuinness. “To see them recognised with something as prestigious as the Torrens Trophy is absolutely deserved.
“They’ve been at the heart of British racing for decades, and I feel privileged to have been part of that story.”
Hutchinson echoed those sentiments, describing the relationship he developed with Clive Padgett and the team during a racing career that included their extraordinary 2010 TT campaign.
“Clive and the Padgett’s team have always been very special to me. We had an unbelievable year together in 2010, winning all five solo TT races, but it’s always been about much more than the racing.
“They’ve been there for me through the good times and the tough ones. There’s so much knowledge, passion and hard work behind Padgett’s, but also real loyalty and friendship.
“They’ve given so much to riders like me and to motorcycle racing. I’m absolutely chuffed to see them win the Torrens Trophy – they really deserve it.”
A rare award for an exceptional contribution
The Torrens Trophy is not presented annually as a matter of course. It is awarded only when the Royal Automobile Club considers an achievement or contribution sufficiently significant to merit the honour.
That selectivity adds further weight to Padgett’s inclusion among its recipients.
From its early connections with Grand Prix greats to victories on the Isle of Man and continued involvement at the highest levels of road and circuit racing, Padgett’s Motorcycles has become woven into the fabric of British motorcycle competition.
