Subaru UK & Ireland is marking International Dog Day by encouraging motorists to bring their four-legged companions along when taking a test drive, recognising the increasingly important role pets play when families choose their next car.
Research commissioned by Subaru found that 80% of dog owners consider their pet when choosing a vehicle, yet fewer than one in four have actually taken their dog with them on a test drive.
The findings suggest canine passengers could also have a preference when it comes to powertrains. Four out of five owners said their dog enjoys travelling by car, while more than two-thirds reported that their pet travelled better in the quieter, smoother environment of an electric vehicle. Around a third noticed no difference compared with travelling in a petrol-powered car.
Subaru prepares for electric dog-friendly adventures
Subaru customers will soon have more choice when it comes to electric motoring, with the new E-Outback and Uncharted due to arrive at UK dealerships shortly ahead of customer deliveries beginning in 2027.
The two new electric models are designed to carry Subaru’s long-established reputation for all-weather and off-road capability into the EV era, combining quiet electric driving with rugged construction and permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.
For dog owners, that could make the new models particularly well suited to journeys beyond conventional roads, from muddy tracks and forest trails to more remote locations where some of the UK’s best dog walks begin.
Pet practicality is also part of Subaru’s approach to its current range.
Customers test driving the Forester and Crosstrek petrol models can bring their dogs along to assess the vehicles in real-world conditions, including checking boot and rear-seat space, ease of access and the suitability of accessories such as pet ramps.
Subaru demonstrators are also equipped with safety accessories including dog guards and harness solutions.
Owners are reminded that dogs travelling in a vehicle should be suitably restrained, whether in a crate, behind a dog guard in the luggage compartment or using an appropriate tethered harness. If a dog is carried in the front passenger seat, Subaru advises that the passenger airbag should be switched off.
Dogs increasingly influencing car choice
Lorraine Bishton, Managing Director of Subaru UK & Ireland, said the UK’s large dog population means practicality for pets has become an important consideration for many motorists.
