Hyundai is giving its largest electric SUV a more exclusive edge with the introduction of the IONIQ 9 Calligraphy Black Ink – a new range-topping specification combining blacked-out exterior detailing with an equally sophisticated dark-themed cabin.

The new model sits above the existing Calligraphy specification and is designed to add a stronger visual identity to Hyundai’s three-row electric flagship without fundamentally changing the formula.

Rather than resorting to an aggressive makeover, Hyundai has taken a relatively restrained approach. Calligraphy Black Ink uses carefully selected black finishes and model-specific details to give the IONIQ 9 greater road presence while retaining the clean ‘Aerosthetic’ design that defines the standard car.

A darker take on Hyundai’s flagship EV

The most obvious changes are found outside.

Calligraphy Black Ink gains a matte-black Hyundai emblem at the front, exclusive 21-inch Calligraphy Black Ink alloy wheels and a gloss-black rear garnish.

There is also an unusually focused choice of paintwork, with buyers offered just two exterior colours: Serenity White Pearl and Abyss Black Pearl.

The contrast of white bodywork against the Black Ink detailing is likely to provide the more dramatic appearance of the two, while Abyss Black Pearl creates an altogether stealthier interpretation of Hyundai’s flagship SUV.

Importantly, the treatment doesn’t overwhelm the IONIQ 9’s existing shape. The intention appears to be sophistication rather than simply making everything black, allowing the SUV’s long, aerodynamically influenced proportions to remain the main attraction.

Black Ink treatment continues inside

The theme carries through into the cabin, where Hyundai has combined black Nappa leather seating with a black pure leather-wrapped steering wheel and black-finished real aluminium dashboard trim.

It’s a relatively simple collection of changes, but one designed to create a more cohesive and luxurious atmosphere inside what is already one of Hyundai’s most spacious and ambitious interiors.

Calligraphy Black Ink also inherits the generous equipment specification of the existing Calligraphy model.

That means buyers continue to benefit from its premium Nappa leather interior and distinctive Calligraphy detailing, while the optional six-seat configuration and Hyundai’s Universal Island 2.0 centre console arrangement allow the cabin layout to be adapted to different passenger and family requirements.

Same IONIQ 9 underneath

There are no fundamental changes to the engineering beneath the Black Ink treatment.

The IONIQ 9 continues to use Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP electric vehicle architecture, with the new specification concentrating instead on design, materials and exclusivity.

That makes sense for a model Hyundai increasingly regards as a genuine flagship rather than simply a larger member of the IONIQ electric-car family.

The IONIQ 9 has also been collecting considerable industry recognition since its introduction. Its awards include German Premium Car of the Year 2026, Best Seven-Seater at the 2026 Parkers New Car Awards, Best 7-Seater Electric SUV at the 2025 TopGear.com Electric Awards and World’s Best Large SUV at the 2026 Women’s Worldwide Car of the Year Awards.

Christopher McKinnon, Vice President, Head of Product and Product Director Office for Europe at Hyundai Motor Europe, said the new specification was intended to build on that reputation.

“IONIQ 9 has established itself as an award-winning flagship EV recognised for its distinctive design, outstanding driving experience and comprehensive feature offering,” he said.

“With Calligraphy Black Ink, we have enhanced the vehicle’s visual character through carefully integrated design details, creating an even more distinctive interpretation of our flagship electric SUV while retaining everything customers value most about the model across Europe.”

Motoring Echo Top Tips

Wait for UK pricing: Calligraphy Black Ink will sit above the already high-spec Calligraphy, so the price premium will be an important consideration once Hyundai UK confirms figures.

Compare it with regular Calligraphy: Much of the luxury equipment is already available on the existing model. Black Ink is primarily about exclusivity, appearance and cabin detailing rather than additional performance.

Consider the six-seater: Anyone looking at an IONIQ 9 as a premium family or long-distance passenger car should investigate the optional six-seat configuration. It could substantially change the character and versatility of the cabin.

Choose your colour carefully: With only Serenity White Pearl and Abyss Black Pearl available, the decision essentially comes down to contrast or stealth. White highlights the Black Ink detailing; black delivers the more understated look.

Motoring Echo Verdict

The IONIQ 9 was already Hyundai’s statement electric SUV, and Calligraphy Black Ink gives it a suitably distinctive flagship specification.

Crucially, Hyundai hasn’t tried too hard. The black badges, dedicated 21-inch wheels and darker cabin detailing provide extra visual presence without undermining the clean design that makes the IONIQ 9 stand apart from many large electric SUVs.

There is no extra performance and no radical technical upgrade, so the eventual price premium over Calligraphy will determine how compelling the Black Ink version really is.

But for buyers already considering the most luxurious IONIQ 9 and wanting something a little more exclusive, this looks like a well-judged addition to the range.

Motoring Echo rating: 4/5 – A subtle but effective flagship makeover for Hyundai’s biggest and most luxurious EV.
