McMurtry Unveils Production Spéirling PURE as Electric Hyper Track Car Enters a New Era.

Developed over a decade of intensive research and engineering, the single-seat Spéirling PURE has evolved from record-breaking prototype into a production-ready hyper track car.

McMurtry Automotive has officially revealed the production version of its revolutionary Spéirling PURE, signalling the start of customer deliveries for one of the most technically advanced electric track cars ever created.

Developed over a decade of intensive research and engineering, the single-seat Spéirling PURE has evolved from record-breaking prototype into a production-ready hyper track car, featuring more than 95 per cent new components and a renewed focus on accessibility, usability and outright driving enjoyment.

Unlike traditional track-only machines, the Spéirling PURE has been engineered to offer plug-and-play ownership, allowing drivers ranging from enthusiastic amateurs to experienced professionals to experience levels of performance previously reserved for elite motorsport.

A Decade of Innovation

Since development began almost ten years ago, McMurtry Automotive has deliberately challenged conventional engineering practices to create a vehicle unlike anything currently available.

The Spéirling first captured worldwide attention in 2022 when its prototype claimed the outright Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb record, outperforming many of the world’s most established performance manufacturers.

Its list of achievements has continued to grow. In 2025, the Spéirling shattered the long-standing Top Gear Test Track lap record previously held by the 2004 Renault Formula One car before making automotive history by becoming the first vehicle ever to successfully drive upside down using its revolutionary Downforce-on-Demand™ fan system.

Those headline-grabbing demonstrations have provided the foundation for the customer version now entering production.

Production Car Built Around Drivers

Although visually familiar to the record-setting prototype, the production Spéirling PURE has undergone a comprehensive redesign beneath the surface.

Engineers have introduced more than 95 per cent new components, refining virtually every aspect of the vehicle while preserving the extraordinary performance that made the prototype famous.

The result is a machine that delivers Formula One-level cornering, braking and acceleration performance while being significantly easier to operate and own than a conventional racing car.

Rather than requiring extensive race engineering support, the Spéirling PURE has been developed as a highly usable track machine that owners can simply arrive, drive and enjoy.

He explained that the Spéirling PURE introduces a new era of track driving by combining exceptional performance with accessibility for drivers of every experience level, while maintaining the extreme grip, acceleration, technology and excitement that define the car.

Yates also highlighted how the project has evolved from a small engineering ambition into an internationally recognised automotive manufacturer through the development of patented technologies and the recruitment of a world-class engineering team.

Importantly, he revealed that early customer deposit holders played a key role in refining the final specification.

Their feedback helped transform a record-breaking prototype into a practical ownership proposition without compromising its extraordinary capabilities.

Hand-Built in Britain

Production of the Spéirling PURE will take place at McMurtry Automotive’s new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in the Cotswolds, where each example will be assembled by hand.

The first customer cars are scheduled to be delivered later this year, marking the beginning of an exclusive ownership programme for one of the world’s most technologically advanced electric performance cars.

While customers prepare to experience the Spéirling PURE for themselves, McMurtry has also hinted that further ambitious projects and record attempts remain firmly on the horizon.

Prototype to Production

The production Spéirling PURE represents far more than a simple evolution of the original prototype.

With approximately 95 per cent of its components redesigned or replaced, the final customer specification reflects years of testing, engineering development and owner feedback, creating a track-focused electric hypercar that combines groundbreaking technology with genuine usability.

Revolutionary fan technology redefines vehicle dynamics

At the heart of the Spéirling PURE lies McMurtry’s patented Downforce-on-Demand™ system, a technology unlike anything currently offered on a production car.

Instead of relying on aerodynamic wings that only become effective at higher speeds, the system generates up to 2,000kg of downforce from a standstill, enabling exceptional levels of grip from the moment the car begins moving. The result is extraordinary performance, with the capability to sustain up to 3g through corners and under braking, giving drivers unprecedented confidence to explore the car’s limits.

The system works using two high-speed electric fans mounted beneath the vehicle. Rotating at up to 23,000rpm, they extract air from a sealed chamber underneath the chassis, effectively creating a powerful vacuum that pulls the car firmly onto the road surface. The expelled airflow also gives the Spéirling PURE an unmistakable soundtrack that resembles a jet engine rather than a conventional electric vehicle.

Unlike traditional aerodynamic systems that lose effectiveness if airflow is disrupted, McMurtry’s fan-generated downforce remains active even during a spin. Combined with dual-fan redundancy, the technology provides an additional layer of safety by helping drivers retain greater control and reduce stopping distances in emergency situations.

Production design evolves without compromising identity

While retaining the unmistakable proportions of the original prototype, the production-specification Spéirling PURE has undergone extensive redesign to accommodate its larger battery pack and production hardware.

Overall dimensions have increased, with the wheelbase growing by 10 per cent, width by 14 per cent and overall length by 11 per cent. Despite these changes, the Spéirling remains remarkably compact, with entirely new carbon-fibre bodywork developed around the revised architecture.

Relocating the Downforce-on-Demand™ system has also lowered the centre of gravity while allowing the fan inlet ducting to become an integral visual feature of the car’s design.

Driver-focused cockpit inspired by endurance racing

Inside, the Spéirling PURE moves beyond the functional prototype environment to deliver a bespoke, race-inspired cockpit tailored to each individual owner.

Every seat is custom moulded using techniques similar to those employed in Le Mans prototype racing, providing exceptional support while ensuring the driver feels fully connected to the car. Buyers can personalise the interior with a wide selection of upholstery colours, contrast stitching, stripes and embroidered logos.

A bespoke steering wheel incorporates key controls within easy reach, including a dedicated paddle allowing drivers to vary fan speed for demonstrations and low-speed operation. Ahead of the driver, a central display presents all critical performance information, including fan settings, power output, battery charge, speed and operating temperatures.

Track performance without Formula One complexity

Although capable of delivering hypercar levels of performance, McMurtry has engineered the Spéirling PURE to be remarkably straightforward to own and operate.

Unlike many specialist track-only machines that require dedicated engineering teams, the Spéirling PURE can be prepared and run by the owner with the assistance of just one competent helper. For those seeking a fully managed experience, McMurtry also offers comprehensive factory support.

Charging has also been designed with practicality in mind. Thanks to modern high-speed charging infrastructure found at many international circuits, the battery can recharge from 20 to 95 per cent in as little as 20 minutes, depending on charger output and ambient conditions.

For venues without rapid charging facilities, McMurtry has developed an optional 100kWh portable energy storage unit capable of delivering up to 120kW charging power. The system itself can be recharged using a conventional three-phase power supply.

Maintenance has equally been simplified through the inclusion of numerous access panels integrated into both the carbon monocoque and bodywork, allowing components such as the fan filter cassette to be serviced quickly without extensive disassembly.

Bespoke specification for every customer

Each Spéirling PURE will be individually configured through McMurtry’s in-house design programme.

Customers work directly with the manufacturer’s design team to create a unique specification, selecting from a wide range of exterior paint finishes, wheel designs, graphics packages and personalised interior trims, ensuring no two examples are identical.

Ready for competitive motorsport

The Spéirling PURE has been engineered with competition in mind and is eligible for a growing number of international track events.

Owners will be able to compete in series including Global Time Attack in North America and the European Time Attack Masters at the Nürburgring, while non-competitive driving programmes such as the GT1 Sports Club offer further opportunities to experience the car’s extraordinary performance.

The vision behind the Spéirling

Named after the Gaelic word for thunderstorm, the Spéirling PURE represents the vision of the late engineering pioneer Sir David McMurtry and former Formula One engineer Thomas Yates.

Sir David, founder of Renishaw plc and inventor of the touch-trigger probe measurement system now used throughout global manufacturing, established McMurtry Automotive in 2016 after recruiting Yates from Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains.

Together, their ambition was to challenge the automotive industry’s trend towards increasingly large and heavy performance cars by reviving and modernising fan-generated downforce technology first seen in the legendary Can-Am and Formula One fan cars of the 1970s.

The result is a completely new interpretation of the high-performance electric vehicle, one that prioritises lightweight engineering, innovation and driver engagement.

Public debut scheduled for summer

The production-specification Spéirling PURE will make its first public appearances over the coming weeks.

Visitors to the Goodwood Festival of Speed (9–12 July) will be able to see the car displayed as part of McMurtry’s showcase before it makes its official international production debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, in Monterey, California, on 14 August.
