BMW Group has delivered its two-millionth fully-electric vehicle, marking another significant milestone in the company’s electrification strategy as its new Neue Klasse generation begins to make an impact on European sales.

The landmark comes more than a decade after the first BMW i3 reached customers in late 2013. When plug-in hybrids are included, BMW Group says it has now delivered around 3.5 million electrified vehicles worldwide since 2013.

Electrification is also taking a growing share of the company’s overall business. During the first half of 2026, more than one in four BMW Group vehicles sold globally was electrified, encompassing both battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

Neue Klasse begins to make its mark

BMW says the arrival of the Neue Klasse is providing fresh momentum, particularly in Europe, where the new BMW iX3 is rapidly establishing itself within the company’s electric range.

Jochen Goller, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands and Sales, said the two-million milestone demonstrated the increasing appeal of electric BMW and MINI models around the world.

He added that European momentum had continued following the introduction of the BMW iX3, with the company approaching 100,000 new orders.

The figures suggest the iX3 is already becoming an important part of BMW’s European business. Since its world premiere, one in three fully-electric BMWs ordered in Europe has been an iX3.

Its influence is even more pronounced within the wider X3 range, where one in every two vehicles ordered is now the fully-electric iX3.

European electric sales climb 38%

Greater availability of the iX3 helped BMW Group record a substantial increase in European battery-electric vehicle sales during the second quarter of 2026.

BEV deliveries rose 38% to 81,445 vehicles, while across the first six months of the year fully-electric models accounted for approximately 28% of BMW Group sales in Europe.

That growing demand will be particularly encouraging for BMW as it expands the Neue Klasse family and increases production across its manufacturing network.

BMW i5 M60 becomes the two-millionth BEV

The two-millionth fully-electric BMW Group vehicle was a BMW i5 M60 xDrive, built at Plant Dingolfing before being delivered to its new owner in Spain.

Meanwhile, another important chapter in the Neue Klasse programme has begun in Germany, with BMW Group Plant Munich starting series production of the new BMW i3 in August.

BMW says strong early demand is resulting in a rapid production ramp-up at the plant.

“The second Neue Klasse model, the BMW i3, is already seeing strong demand since orders opened ahead of its market launch,” Goller said.

More than 50 years of electric development

Although today’s electric BMWs bear little resemblance to the company’s earliest experiments, BMW’s involvement with electric mobility stretches back more than half a century.

That experience ultimately led to the launch of the original BMW i3 in 2013, one of the first purpose-designed premium electric cars to reach volume production.

Thirteen years later, BMW Group has reached two million fully-electric deliveries, with Neue Klasse now expected to drive the next stage of that expansion.

With a broad portfolio spanning battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models across BMW and MINI, the company believes it can continue increasing electrified sales while allowing customers to choose the powertrain that best suits their requirements.

Motoring Echo Verdict

Two million BEVs is more than a headline number for BMW – it shows just how far the company has travelled since the original carbon-bodied i3 appeared in 2013.

More significant, however, is what appears to be happening now. With electric cars accounting for around 28% of BMW Group’s European sales in the first half of 2026, and the new iX3 already representing one in three electric BMW orders in Europe, Neue Klasse is beginning to look like much more than another model-generation change.

The next test will be whether BMW can maintain that momentum as Neue Klasse expands across the range. On the early numbers, the signs are certainly promising.
