Miele is expanding the electrification of its European service fleet with an order for 840 Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Transporter vans, supporting its programme to reduce emissions from customer service operations.

The vehicles will be introduced across Europe during 2026 and 2027, with 440 allocated to Germany. The agreement also includes specialist vehicle racking supplied by Sortimo, providing technicians with storage for tools, equipment and replacement parts.

The move represents a particularly significant change for Miele’s Professional Customer Service division, where almost all 420 employees are expected to move to battery-electric vehicles.

Electric vehicles becoming the service fleet standard

Miele’s Professional Customer Service operation is approaching full electrification, with battery-electric vans expected to account for almost 100 per cent of its vehicle fleet.

The transition is progressing more gradually within Domestic Customer Service, where electric vehicles currently represent approximately 30 per cent of the fleet. That proportion is expected to increase as existing vehicles reach their replacement dates.

The company says electrification forms part of its wider sustainability strategy, particularly as service vehicles are used daily and contribute to operational emissions.

Practical requirements shape vehicle choice

Rather than simply replacing diesel vehicles with electric alternatives, Miele has considered the practical demands of technicians working across different service territories.

The company already operates electric vehicles, including Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz, and has used operational experience to inform its latest fleet requirements.

Factors assessed include driving range, charging times, energy consumption and everyday suitability, alongside feedback from service technicians.

The new Transporters will feature Sortimo’s lightweight vehicle racking, designed to accommodate the equipment required for customer service visits while limiting unnecessary vehicle weight.

Reducing weight can help improve energy efficiency and preserve driving range, particularly in electric commercial vehicles.

Improving the working environment

The new vans are also intended to provide a more comfortable and practical working environment.

Electric powertrains are well suited to stop-start driving, while cabin pre-conditioning allows the interior to be heated before departure when the vehicle remains connected to a charger.

Driver assistance systems, safety technology and organised equipment storage are also expected to benefit technicians carrying out multiple customer visits each day.

Rebecca Steinhage, Miele’s Executive Director of Human Resources & Corporate Affairs, said the company was pursuing two objectives: reducing direct emissions from customer service operations and providing modern, efficient mobile workstations for its technicians.

She also highlighted the importance of matching vehicles, charging infrastructure and operating requirements to achieve a successful transition.

Motoring Echo Perspective

Miele’s fleet investment provides another example of how electric light commercial vehicles are moving beyond limited trials into everyday business operations.

For service organisations, the financial and environmental case depends on more than vehicle selection. Charging availability, daily mileage, equipment weight and technician working patterns all influence whether electrification can be introduced successfully.

Miele’s decision to use operational feedback from its existing electric fleet is particularly relevant, demonstrating the importance of matching vehicle capabilities to actual working requirements.

With almost its entire Professional Customer Service team moving towards electric vans, the programme will provide a substantial real-world test of battery-electric vehicles in European service operations.
