Electric vehicle drivers are being encouraged to review how they charge their cars ahead of the latest increase to the UK’s Standard Variable Tariff (SVT), with smart charging specialist Ohme claiming motorists could save more than £90 per month by switching to a dedicated EV electricity tariff.
From 1 July, the standard electricity rate will increase to 26.11p/kWh, pushing up home energy costs. While charging an electric vehicle at the new tariff remains significantly cheaper than running a comparable petrol car, Ohme says the greatest savings are available through smart EV tariffs that take advantage of lower overnight electricity prices.

Significant Running Cost Savings
With petrol prices continuing to fluctuate and UK EV sales increasing by more than 23% so far this year, the financial case for electric motoring continues to strengthen.
According to Ohme’s calculations, a typical UK driver covering 6,800 miles annually would spend approximately:
- £1,218.90 driving a petrol car.
- £443.87 charging an EV on the new Standard Variable Tariff.
- Just £136 per year when charging through Ohme using a smart tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Go (8p/kWh).
That represents an annual saving of £1,082.90 compared with petrol-powered motoring — equivalent to more than £90 every month.
