Almost one in three UK tradespeople have considered leaving their profession over the past year as longer working hours and increasing workplace pressures continue to take their toll, according to new research from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
The latest study reveals that UK tradespeople are now working an average of 9.44 hours per day, representing an increase of almost 10 per cent compared with 2022, when the average working day stood at 8.59 hours. The additional 51 minutes worked each day equates to almost one extra month of work over the course of a year, highlighting the growing demands placed on Britain’s skilled workforce.
The research suggests younger workers are feeling the greatest strain. Nearly 45 per cent of tradespeople aged between 18 and 24 admit they have considered quitting their job because of work-related pressures.
Work-life balance is becoming an increasing concern across the sector, with 44 per cent of respondents regularly worrying about achieving a healthy balance between work and personal life. A further 39 per cent say they are concerned about the effects of constant overworking.
Skilled Worker Shortage Raises Further Concerns
The prospect of experienced tradespeople leaving the industry presents a significant challenge for the UK economy. According to the research, three-quarters of van drivers believe there is already a shortage of skilled workers entering the trade, making staff retention increasingly important.
With many tradespeople relying on their vehicles every day, minimising downtime has become a vital part of running a successful business. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles says dependable vehicles and predictable servicing costs can help reduce unnecessary stress while keeping businesses operating efficiently.
The manufacturer’s range of service plans allows customers to spread the cost of scheduled maintenance through monthly or upfront payments, helping to avoid unexpected servicing bills.
Five Years of Added Peace of Mind
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles also includes its 5+ Promise as standard on all new Transporter, Amarok and California models. The package includes five scheduled services (or three services for electric models), three MOTs, a five-year warranty and five years of roadside assistance, offering additional reassurance for business users.
The brand’s focus on reliability has also been recognised by the industry, having recently been named ‘Most Reliable Van Manufacturer’ by Fleet News for the second consecutive year.
Industry Under Pressure
Richard Welch, Technical Training & Development Manager at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said:
“UK tradespeople are facing challenges from all angles, having to work longer days than ever before to survive, the industry is at breaking point. At Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, we are dedicated to providing vehicles and services that reduce the burden by being reliable business partners to drivers through those long, hard days.”
As working hours continue to rise and recruitment challenges persist, dependable commercial vehicles, comprehensive warranty cover and predictable running costs are becoming increasingly important for Britain’s tradespeople, helping them spend less time worrying about their vehicles and more time serving customers.
