The Škoda Superb Estate has been named Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year 2027, taking the overall title as well as victories in two individual categories.
The Superb Estate SE L 2.0 TDI 193PS DSG 4×4 won the Caravan Weight 1600kg–1700kg category and was also named the winner of the Family Towcars class.
Judges praised the Superb Estate for its smooth ride, effortless driveability and high levels of comfort when towing.
Its suspension was singled out for effectively absorbing undulations transmitted through the caravan, helping the car remain composed and reassuring across the competition’s demanding test routes.
The judging panel concluded that the Superb Estate continues to set a high benchmark for towcar performance, combining stability and comfort with the practicality expected from Škoda’s large estate.
42 cars put through demanding towing tests
The Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year is the longest-running towcar testing competition in the leisure vehicle industry, with 42 vehicles assessed for the 2027 awards.
To qualify, manufacturer-entered vehicles must be capable of towing a trailer weighing at least 750kg and be available for sale on 1 October 2026.
Cars are divided into categories according to the weight of caravan they are suited to towing. Additional classes cover Pick-Up Towcars, Family Towcars, Large Family Towcars, Electric Towcars, Plug-in Hybrid Towcars and Luxury Towcars.
Before testing begins, every vehicle is checked by the competition’s scrutineering team before undergoing separate caravanability, technical and driving assessments.
Practicality, acceleration and stability assessed
The caravanability test examines how suitable each vehicle is for touring in everyday use. Judges consider factors including boot capacity, towball height, the availability of towing information and whether the vehicle can accommodate equipment typically carried on a caravan holiday.
Each car is then paired with a caravan ballasted to 85% of the vehicle’s kerbweight, or to the vehicle’s towing limit where that figure is lower.
Technical judges use specialist equipment to measure acceleration and braking performance, while the driving assessment takes place at UTAC Millbrook.
Cars are tested across gradients, hill starts, downhill braking, reversing and high-speed running, with judges also assessing stability, comfort, visibility and the ability to safely join faster-moving traffic.
One of the toughest parts of the assessment is Millbrook’s Alpine route, which includes a 17% hill start and 26% downhill braking test.
The high-speed bowl is also used to examine stability and how each car-and-caravan combination responds when judges deliberately attempt to provoke instability.
Testing continues throughout the assessment week across Millbrook’s varied proving-ground routes, giving judges the opportunity to examine how each vehicle performs in a wide range of towing conditions.
The result puts the Škoda Superb Estate SE L 2.0 TDI 193PS DSG 4×4 at the top of the 2027 field, with its combination of towing ability, comfort and family practicality securing three awards, including the overall Towcar of the Year title.
