The all-new BMW i3 has secured one of the UK automotive industry’s most prestigious accolades, being named Overall Car of the Year at CAR Magazine’s inaugural Genius Awards, while the BMW iX3 added to the marque’s success by taking the Electric Vehicle (EV) of the Year title.
The 2026 Genius Awards mark a significant milestone for the respected motoring publication, representing the first time in its 64-year history that CAR Magazine has officially ranked the finest new cars currently on sale in the UK.
For BMW, the double success underlines the strength of its next-generation electric vehicle strategy, with both award-winning models showcasing the brand’s groundbreaking Neue Klasse technologies.
BMW i3 ushers in a new era
Set to arrive in UK showrooms later this year, the all-new BMW i3 introduces Neue Klasse innovations to one of the brand’s most iconic model lines. The sleek saloon combines a bold new design language with advanced digital technologies, enhanced driver assistance systems and class-leading efficiency.
Offering an impressive WLTP-certified range of up to 563 miles on a single charge, the i3 aims to redefine expectations in the premium electric saloon segment while maintaining BMW’s long-established reputation for engaging driving dynamics.
Explaining the judges’ decision, Ben Miller, Editor of CAR Magazine, said:
“CAR’s Genius Awards recognise original thinking, innovation and brilliance, all of which the BMW i3 has in its spades. That’s why it wins Car of the Year 2026.
“The weight of expectation here was significant, with the 3 Series a standard-bearer for practicality, style and driving enjoyment for over 50 years. Could BMW deliver the same in an ultra-competitive, all-electric package at the right price? Turns out it absolutely could.
“The new iX3, already a multiple Giant Test winner in the pages of CAR, secures our EV of the Year award. And by combining much of the same long-range, fast-charging hardware with the kind of sparkling dynamics with which the best BMWs are synonymous, the i3 rightly secures the overall Car of the Year award.”
BMW welcomes prestigious recognition
Accepting the award on behalf of BMW Group UK and Ireland, Chief Executive David George described the honour as particularly meaningful given the significance of the 3 Series lineage.
He said:
“We are deeply honoured to see the BMW i3 named CAR Magazine’s inaugural Car of the Year at The Genius Awards.
“This accolade is especially meaningful as it celebrates a model at the very heart of the BMW brand. For five decades, the BMW 3 Series has set benchmarks in innovation, design and driving dynamics, and this latest generation continues that legacy with a truly compelling all-electric offering.
“We extend our thanks to the entire CAR team for this notable recognition.”
BMW iX3 continues its award-winning success
Alongside the i3’s overall victory, the BMW iX3 strengthened its already impressive reputation by collecting the EV of the Year award.
Presenting the honour, Piers Ward, Deputy Editor of CAR Magazine, praised the SUV’s combination of technological innovation and dynamic performance.
Among the standout features highlighted were BMW’s innovative Panoramic Vision display and the intelligent electronic architecture centred around the new Heart of Joy vehicle control system, which simplifies wiring while improving vehicle integration and responsiveness.
Ward also praised the iX3’s engaging handling characteristics, noting that it:
“Rotates sweetly as you work the steering and throttle.”
Summing up the judges’ verdict, he described the iX3 as an example of:
“Genuine innovation, intelligently implemented.”
The latest accolade brings the BMW iX3’s tally to 16 major industry awards in the UK, including four overall Car of the Year titles, reinforcing its position as one of the benchmark premium electric SUVs on sale.
