Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled a series of significant upgrades for its flagship Grand California motorhome, introducing new off-grid energy solutions, enhanced safety systems and a more refined living environment designed to give owners even greater freedom on the road.

Built on the latest generation Volkswagen Crafter, the Grand California continues to be offered as a fully factory-built motorhome in two distinct layouts, while the latest enhancements focus on increasing comfort, sustainability and self-sufficiency for modern touring.

Greater Independence Through New Lithium Battery Technology

One of the most important upgrades comes in the form of new energy packages designed to reduce reliance on campsites and external power supplies.

Customers can now replace the standard AGM leisure battery with two additional LiFePO₄ (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries or opt for a comprehensive Off-Grid Package, which combines lithium battery technology with permanently installed solar panels.

Solar output varies depending on the model:

  • Grand California 600: 104W peak solar system
  • Grand California 680: 174W peak solar system

The result is a significant improvement in energy independence, allowing owners to generate electricity while travelling or parked in remote locations.

Faster Charging and More Usable Power

Volkswagen says the new lithium batteries provide a number of major advantages over traditional AGM technology.

Compared with conventional batteries, LiFePO₄ units deliver:

  • Around five times longer cycle life
  • Integrated deep-discharge protection
  • Nearly 40% more usable battery capacity
  • Significantly faster charging performance
  • Maximum charging currents of up to 200 amps

Usable capacity rises from approximately 46Ah with the standard 92Ah AGM battery to around 64Ah using the dual lithium battery setup.

When paired with the new solar charging system, the Grand California can prioritise photovoltaic charging in ECO mode, improving efficiency while reducing dependence on external electrical hook-ups.

For travellers who enjoy extended stays in remote locations, the upgrades offer considerably greater flexibility.

Enhanced Driver Assistance

Volkswagen has also expanded the Grand California’s suite of driver assistance technologies.

Standard equipment now includes:

  • Driver monitoring with fatigue detection

Optional technology includes:

  • Intersection Assist, designed to improve safety when manoeuvring through junctions and busy urban environments.

The additions aim to make long-distance touring safer and less tiring.

More Digital Than Ever

Technology inside the cabin has also moved forward.

New infotainment systems now feature displays measuring up to 12 inches, alongside:

  • Smartphone integration
  • Connected online services
  • Improved digital functionality

These updates help bring the Grand California’s technology in line with Volkswagen’s latest passenger and commercial vehicle range.

Park in direct sunlight whenever possible to maximise charging throughout the day.

A More Premium Living Space

Inside, Volkswagen continues with the attractive Atami Bamboo interior finish, creating a warmer and more contemporary atmosphere.

Practical improvements include:

  • Additional storage solutions
  • A more versatile dining table
  • Improved day-to-day usability

The result is a motorhome that feels increasingly like a modern apartment on wheels.

Two Layouts to Suit Different Travellers

The Grand California remains available in two established configurations:

Grand California 600

  • Compact overall length
  • Transverse rear double bed
  • Easier manoeuvrability

Grand California 680

  • Longer wheelbase
  • Fixed longitudinal beds
  • Greater interior living space

Both models continue to offer fully integrated kitchens, washrooms and sleeping accommodation as part of Volkswagen’s factory-built design.

Pricing

The new energy upgrades are initially available to order in Germany:

  • LiFePO₄ battery upgrade: from €833
  • Off-Grid Package (Grand California 600): from €1,719.55
  • Off-Grid Package (Grand California 680): from €2,326.45

UK availability and pricing are expected to be confirmed separately.
