INEOS Automotive has secured major orders for the Grenadier from the Italian Army and Austrian Government, marking the first time the rugged 4×4 has been ordered by sovereign defence forces.
The agreements represent an important step for the Grenadier beyond its established civilian and specialist fleet markets, as INEOS looks to position the vehicle for military, security and other mission-critical applications.
Italy becomes first NATO country to place major Grenadier military order
The Italian Army has selected the INEOS Grenadier following a procurement process that saw the 4×4 chosen as its preferred platform.
The agreement makes Italy the first NATO country to place what INEOS describes as a sizeable military order for the Grenadier.
ATflow, INEOS Automotive’s regional distributor, will handle the supply of the vehicles, with deliveries scheduled to begin in early 2027.
INEOS has not disclosed the number of vehicles involved or the financial value of the contract.
Austria selects Grenadier for defence and security roles
A separate Austrian Government tender has also resulted in an order for the Grenadier.
The contract was secured by vehicle armouring and conversion specialist Valentin Tusch GmbH and will see adapted Grenadiers supplied to Austria’s defence and interior security forces.
The vehicles will be modified to provide enhanced protection for their intended operational roles.
Initial deliveries and trials are expected to begin before the end of 2026.
Why has the Grenadier been selected?
INEOS says the Grenadier’s relatively straightforward engineering and heavy-duty construction were important factors in both procurement processes.
The vehicle offers different body configurations and wheelbases, while its solid-beam axles and load-carrying capability are designed for demanding terrain and sustained operation.
A comparatively simple mechanical layout and emphasis on reducing component complexity could also prove valuable for military users, where field maintenance, durability and ease of repair can be as important as outright off-road ability.
Those characteristics reflect the original philosophy behind the Grenadier: a utility-focused 4×4 developed to perform demanding jobs rather than primarily serve the lifestyle SUV market.
More military contracts could follow
The Italian and Austrian agreements could be the beginning of a considerably larger defence business for INEOS Automotive.
The company says it is already involved in advanced procurement discussions with other European and NATO armed forces as governments reassess equipment requirements amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
That includes the UK.
The Team Grenadier consortium has been selected to progress to the trials stage of the British Ministry of Defence’s Light Mobility Vehicle programme.
Success there would represent another significant endorsement for the platform, although selection for trials should not be confused with the award of a production contract.
Grenadier already working with security services
Military procurement is a new milestone for INEOS, but the Grenadier has already found a role with government and security organisations internationally.
Vehicles are being used by police, border patrol, emergency rescue and specialist security organisations, including tactical and counter-terrorism units in Germany, France and Spain.
INEOS also points to adoption by security and border organisations in countries including Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Serbia and Slovakia.
The new Italian and Austrian agreements take that progression a stage further by placing the Grenadier directly into sovereign defence procurement programmes.
Motoring Echo Verdict
The significance of these contracts goes well beyond the number of Grenadiers eventually delivered to Italy and Austria.
INEOS created the Grenadier around a deliberately traditional formula: strong axles, serious load-carrying ability, straightforward engineering and an emphasis on durability. Military and security procurement gives that philosophy a very different test from selling an adventure-focused 4×4 to private buyers.
Italy becoming the first NATO nation to place a substantial military order is therefore an important reference point for INEOS Automotive, particularly with further European procurement discussions under way.
The British Ministry of Defence trials could be even more significant. There is no guarantee that Team Grenadier will ultimately secure an order, but reaching the trials stage alongside these first European defence contracts suggests the Grenadier is beginning to establish a credible second life as a specialist military and security platform.
